Surfing Breaks

Looking for a holiday idea with a difference this year? Why not learn how to surf on the stunning Cornish coast? We have two resorts to choose from, both Clowance Estate and Burn Park are both in close proximity to an array of local beaches, perfect to ride those waves!

Burn Park

Our number one choice would be the Raven Surf School ran by a former British and European surfing champion. Widemouth Bay is located on the coastal road leading out from the town, giving it easy access to and from the resort of Burn Park. The surf school is open all year round offering a true surfing experience. Packages range from beginner classes to advanced classes including understanding the beach environment and safety, judging waves and catching them to safety recap, late take offs and tube riding. Lessons start from £35 per hour, with one to one lessons available from £100. Surfboard hire is available from £12 for a full day, and £10 to hire a wetsuit for the day.

Another surfing school we can recommend is Bude Surfing Experience, which takes place along Summerleaze beach, which is directly in the town of Bude.  Lessons are from £35 for two and a half hours, which includes surfboard and wetsuit hire, and private sessions can be booked from £60 per person.

We recommend with all surfing experiences to book in advance as this is a very popular activity, particularly during peak season and school holidays.

Clowance Estate

The nearest place for surfing lessons is either Gwithian or Godrevy which are both approximately 10-15 minutes away from the resort. The ‘Shore Surf’ Surf School takes place from Godrevy National Trust Car Park and is conducted in small groups of similar ability. Lessons start from 10am from a morning slot, or from 2pm for the afternoon session. From the vast number of courses available, the Find Your Feet class is by far the most popular. This two and a half lesson is priced at £30, or if you prefer a multiple day course, they start from £115 across three days. Private lessons are also available from £75, with surfboards and wet suits at an additional charge.

Gwithian Surf Academy provide beginner/improver courses lasting for two hours, covering safety issues, catching waves, standing up and controlling the surf board. One lesson starts from £30 per person, with two lessons priced at £55. Surfboard hire and wetsuits are provided free of charge with every lesson purchased. The company also offer group lessons at a discounted price (perfect for the entire family) and private lessons and advanced coaching from £75.

If you want to go further, Newquay beaches are quite famously good for surfing, but it's about a 45 minute drive from Clowance – please ask at reception should you require any further details.

It might be worth mentioning as well that the 'surf' varies every day in different locations so it's worth checking the webcams and tide times if you're quite experienced and want bigger, cleaner waves. The good thing about Clowance being so close to both North and South coasts is that you can check on the day and choose between the two!
